June 25, 2013: Benjamin Pierce received the 20-year Test of Time award from the IEEE Logic in Computer Science conference for his paper "Typing and Subtyping for Mobile Processes," with Davide Sangiorgi.

January 14, 2013: Aaron Roth, CIS Assistant Profesor, was awarded an NSF CAREER Award, "The Algotithmic Foundations of Data Privacy".

2013: "A Guide to the Classification Theorem for Compact Surfaces" coauthored by Dr. Jean Gallier, CIS Professor, and Dianna Xu, former CIS Ph.D and presently Chair of CS at Bryn Mawr, has been published by Springer-Verlag.

November 14, 2012: Dr. Aaron Roth, CIS Assistant Professor, and Nate Foster, CIS Alum now at Cornell, have been named winners of the Yahoo! ACE (Academic Career Enhancement) Award for 2012- 2013.

April 11, 2012: PRECISE Researchers Rajeev Alur, Ashutosh Trivedi, and Dominik Wojtczak won the best paper award for their work titled "Optimal scheduling for constant-rate multi-mode systems" at 15th Conference on Hybrid Systems (HSCC) at 2012 Cyber-Physical Systems Week in Beijing.

December 10, 2010: George J. Pappas, Secondary Faculty of CIS and Deputy Dean for Research at SEAS, was awarded the 2010 Antonio Ruberti Young Researcher Prize by the IEEE Control Systems Society to recognize contributions by a young researcher in the broad field of systems and control.

October 2010, Zack Ives named the Raymond S. Markowitz Faculty Fellow in recognition of his research and educational accomplishments, and of his service to the school.

June 16, 2010: Andreas Haeberlen was awarded the 2009 Otto Hahn Medal, awarded by the Max Planck Society for outstanding scientific achievements.

April 20, 2010: Zack Ives received the Lindback Award, the highest teaching award at the University level given in recognition of "distinguished teaching."

April 5, 2010: Ben Taskar has been named, as one of17, for the Office of Naval Research's 2010 Young Investigator Program recipients.

April 2010: Secondary faculty member, Junhyong Kim, Co-Director of the PGFI, was awarded a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship, entitled - "Genome-Scale Higher Order Evolution".

April 2010: Zack Ives was selected to the DARPA Information Science And Technology (ISAT) Advisory Panel.

April 2010: Rajeev Alur has been awarded this year's LICS Test-of-Time Award for his paper in LICS 1990, "Model-Checking for Real-Time Systems". Secondary faculty member, Peter Freyd, also won this year's award for his paper, "Recursive Types Reduced to Inductive Types".

March 31, 2010: Sanjeev Khanna received the highest teaching award in SEAS, the S. Reid Warren Award, "presented annually by the undergrad student body and the Eng Alumni the School of Engineering and Applied Science."

March 1, 2010: Sasha Rakhlin, CIS secondary assistant professor, received an NSF CAREER Award for his research, "Statistical and Computational Complexities of Modern Learning Problems".

February 14, 2010: Ben Taskar has been awarded the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan 2010 Research Fellowship Award in the field of Computer Science.

January 2010: Ani Nenkova received an NSF CAREER Award for research, "Capturing Content and Linguistic Quality in Automatic Extractive and Abstractive Summarization."

December 2009: Max Likhachev has been selected to participate on the DARPA 2010 Computer Science Study Panel, a great honor.

March 4th, 2009: Rajeev Alur has been awarded the George H. Heilmeier Faculty Award for 2009-10, one of the highest research awards given in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Penn.

May 2009: Peter Buneman, our Adjunct Professor, was elected to Fellow of the Royal Society.

March 2009: Ben Taskar was invited to participate on the DARPA 2009 Computer Science Study Panel, a great and well-deserved honor.

February 2009: Steve Zdancewic received the highly recognized 2009 Alfred P. Sloan Research Faculty Fellowship Award this year along with our secondary faculty, Josh Plotkin, Assistant Professor in Biology.

February 2009: A special thanks went to Mitch Marcus and Ani Nenkova for hosting this years NACLO, North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad, competition.

Jan 29, 2009: Boon Thau Loo received a prestigious NSF CAREER Award on "Towards a Unified Declarative Platform for Composable Verifiable Networks."

Dec 3, 2008: Insup Lee received IEEE Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems (TCRTS) Technical Achievement Award for outstanding technical achievement and leadership. The award was given at the IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium held in Barcelona, Dec 2008.

Jul 14, 2008:
Rajeev Alur was awarded the 2008 CAV Award for his fundamental contributions to the theory of Real-Time System Verifications.

January 2008: Professor Rajeev Alur named IEEE Fellow and ACM Fellow.

May 12th, 2013: Wenchao Zhous, CIS alumni, received Honorable Mention for the SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award (2013). Zhou’s thesis is titled "Secure Time-aware Provenance for Distributed Systems".

February 14th, 2013: Fei Sha, CIS PhD and GRASP Alumni and Bjoern Hartmann, DMD and MSE CIS Alumni were selected for the 2013 Sloan Research Fellow.

February 4th, 2013: Penn masters students Pratikkumar Patel, Tianming Zheng, Jiehua Zhu won the 1st place at the Software-defined Networking (SDN) / Network Programmability Hackathon.

December 14, 2012: Lauren Shapiro, a junior in Penn Engineering's Digital Media Design (DMD) program, is the recipient of the prestigious Apple iOS Women in Technology Scholarship.

December 13, 2012: Heart-on-a-Chip Receives First Prize at 2012 World Embedded Software Competition. This winning team included 2 CMPE students (Varun Sampath and Sriram Radhakrishnan) and a CIS PhD student (Zhihao Jiang).

December 7, 2012: Best Paper Award at IEEE RTSS 2012. This joint paper (with KAIST) received the best paper award at IEEE RTSS (Real-Time Systems Symposium) 2012: Hoon Sung Chwa, Hyoungbu Back, Sanjian Chen (CIS PhD), Jinkyu Lee, Arvind Easwaran, Insik Shin and Insup Lee, Extending Task-level to Job-level Fixed Priority Assignment and Schedulability Analysis Using Pseudo-deadlines.

October 24, 2012: DMD senior Jason Merrin has won the "Pitch to the Industry" animated series contest at the Miami International University of Art and Design 2012.

October 6th, 2012:
PhD students Katie Gibson and Laurel Emurian received Yahoo Scholarships to attend the 2012 Grace Hopper Conference. CIS is a Silver Academic Sponsor of the 2012 Grace Hopper Conference, with 15 students attending!

September 18, 2012: PennApps first place prize went to the J.A.M. team, Java Auto Music, an app able to read a .wav file or a recording and to produce a sheet of music. JAM team members are CS juniors from left: Jocelin Lee, Digital Media Design (DMD), Angela Yu, Computational Biology, and Ana Mei, DMD.

September 17, 2012: Zhuoyao Zhang (advisee of Boon Thau Loo) received the best student paper award for "Automated Profiling and Resource Management of Pig Programs for Meeting Service Level Objectives" at the 9th ACM International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC) 2012. This paper is co-authored
with HP Labs.

July 12th, 2012: Annie Louis and Dr. Ani Nenkova received the Best Paper Award for "A Coherence Model based on Syntactic Patterns" at the Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing conference (EMNLP), July 12 – 14 in Jeju Island, Korea.

May 15, 2012: Congratulations to our Seniors who are going on for their PhD! Rumen Stamatov in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CBB) at Duke University & Jessica Ouyang in NLP at Columbia University.

April 11, 2012: The Best Student Paper Award for the 18th  IEEE Real-Time and Embedded Technology and Applications Symposium (RTAS) went to Miroslav Pajic and Zhihao Jiang for their paper,  “From Verification to Implementation: A Model Translation Tool and a Pacemaker Case Study,” co-authored with Insup Lee, Oleg Sokolsky and Rahul Mangharam.

April 2012: Alex Kulesza is the winner of the Rubinoff Award  for a  thesis that "could lead to innovative applications of computer technology" for his thesis "Learning with Determinantal Point Processes."

March 30, 2012: Honorable Mention in the NSF Graduate Fellowship 2012 awards...Congratulations to Alexander Shoulson, PhD student advised by Dr. Norm Badler, and Mabel Zhang, PhD Student advised by Dr. Kostas Daniilidis, for receiving honorable mentions in this year's NSF Graduate Fellowship.

March 12, 2012: "Three CIS Undergraduates Selected as KPCB Engineering Fellows". Jeff Grimes (CIS'15), Zachary Wasserman (CIS'13) and Nathan Fraenkel (CIS'14) have been selected as 2012 KPCB Engineering Fellows.

March 9, 2012: Trisha Kothari was selected as a 2012-2013 Microsoft Scholarship recipient. She was chosen because of her impressive academic record and strong interest in making contributions to the software industry.

August 7, 2011: Congratulations to Joe Kider, Kaitlin Pollock and Alla Safonova for winning an Honorable Mention award for one of the top papers at SCA, ACM/Eurographics Symposium on Computer Animation 2011. The paper was titled: "A Data Driven Model for Human Fatigue"

June 29, 2012: Our students, Kaitlin Pollock, along with summer REU, Kelsey Hurley, have been awarded ACM-W scholarships to attend SIGGRAPH 2011. Congratulations to them and to Norm Badler for his mentoring!

June 27, 2011: Hipster City Cycle (HCC), created by DMD alums Michael Highland and Keith McKnight along with Kevin Jenkins, is a pixel-art bike race through the city's humble neighborhoods that is now available through the Apple App Store. View the Article in the Inquirer.

November 30, 2010: GRASP undergraduate research student, Jessica Wetstone, received an Honorable Mention in the Computing Research Association's Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award competition for 2011.

October 19, 2010: IBM Research has awarded the 2010 Josef Raviv Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship to CIS  graduate Colin Blundell for promising research in computer architecture.

September 2010: Todd Green and Micah Sherr, co-winners of the 2010 SEAS Rubinoff Award...conferred on graduating PhDs “whose dissertation has resulted in or could lead to innovative applications of computer technology.”

May 2010: Adam Aviv, CIS PhD Student, has been appointed a CTL Graduate Fellow for Teaching Excellence for 2010-11. Only 12 fellows from across the university this year were selected.

April 2010: Benjamin Gojman and Joe Kider received the 2010 Penn Prize for Excellence in Teaching by Graduate Students, which recognizes the profound impact of graduate students on undergraduate education at Penn.

April 4, 2010: Kuzman Ganchev, co-advised by Fernando Pereira and Ben Taskar, was selected as the runner-up for the John Atanasoff Award from the President of the Republic of Bulgaria. This award is given annually to a Bulgarian scientist under 35 for scientific or practical contributions to the development of computer and information technology worldwide and significant economic or social importance for Bulgaria.
