Fall 2004, David Matuszek
All necessary software will be available in the computer labs. However, most students find it more convenient to use their own computer. You can fairly easily move your work back and forth between computers, as needed.
To use your own computer, you will need to install the following (free) software and documentation. You can use newer versions of the software, if available.
Windows or Linux:
If you have MacOS X, you already have the Java SDK installed on your computer.
To be sure you have the latest version for your OS, go online, open
Preferences, and choose
Software Update. (If you are running
Jaguar, you really should upgrade to Panther; one advantage is that you get
a newer, better version of Java.)
The newest version of Java available on the Mac is 1.4.2. This is new enough for CIT 591, and is only one version behind that on Windows, which is called version 5 but used to be called version 1.5.
