CIS 110 Exams
Regrade request form
This page includes information on the mid-term and final exams, as
well as exams and solutions from previous semesters. Keep in mind
that the selection and order of topics varies some from semester to
semester, so old exams may include questions that are not relevant to
this semester, and they may not cover all topics.

Exam Procedures
Mid-term and final exam procedures are governed by rules designed to
prevent distraction to other exam takers. Following these rules is
important not only for the integrity of the exam, but out of respect
for your fellow students. The general procedures are listed below,
but are subject to change depending on the particular exam
circumstances.
- Exams begin on time. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you
will not be seated. In no event will you receive extra time to
compensate for arriving late.
- You may not leave the room during the first 30 minutes or last
15 minutes of the exam.
- You must stop writing as soon as time is called. If you do not
stop writing promptly, you may receive a 0 on the exam.
- You must turn in all work, including scratch paper. We will
have staplers for you to attach it to your exam. We are not
responsible for any loose pages of your exam.
- Food and drink are forbidden, including water and gum.
Spills are extremely distracting to your fellow test takers.
- Proctors will seat you, starting in the front of the room and
working back. You may not choose your own seat. Space
permitting, we seat students in alternate seats, two rows out of
three. This ensures that proctors can reach everyone quickly and
quietly to answer questions during the exam. If you are
left-handed, proctors will help you find a left-handed desk to sit
at.
- Turn off phones and other noise-making devices before
entering the exam room. If your phone rings or vibrates in the
exam room you will receive a significant point deduction.
- Get out any writing implements you will need before entering
the exam room. Once you are seated, you my not open your
bag for any reason. We will have pencils and scratch paper
available for anyone who needs it.
- You may write in pen or pencil, in any color except red or
pink. We use red for grading. Some students find it
helpful to write code in multiple colors, similar to DrJava's
syntax highlighting. You are welcome to do so as long as you
avoid red.
- You must take the exam at the scheduled time and location
unless you have received explicit permission otherwise.
Oversleeping and late arrival are not valid reasons to make up an
exam. Students entitled to special accommodations must arrange
to take their exam at SDS. You will be required to submit a
doctor's note in the event of illness.
Mid-Term
- Date: Tuesday, October 8
- Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
- Grading Scale: The median on this exam was 73.5. The
standard deviation was 16.28. The curve below gives
an approximate conversion of your numeric score to a
percentage grade.
- Since we are not curving homework scores this semester, the
exam curve is substantially lower than in past semesters.
To understand how you are doing in the course, make sure to
combine your midterm percentage and homework score as described
in
the grading
policies. We expect the final course grades this
semester to be in line with past semesters.
- You can also computer your approximate midterm percentage
using this Java function:
double midtermCurve(double myRawMidtermScore) {
double myCurvedScore = 0.0;
if (myRawMidtermScore >= 83.5)
myCurvedScore = (myRawMidtermScore - 83.5) / 1.65 + 90;
else if (myRawMidtermScore >= 73.5)
myCurvedScore = (myRawMidtermScore - 73.5) + 80;
else if (myRawMidtermScore >= 50)
myCurvedScore = (myRawMidtermScore - 50) / 2.35 + 70;
else if (myRawMidtermScore >= 30)
myCurvedScore = (myRawMidtermScore - 30) / 2.00 + 60;
else
myCurvedScore = myRawMidtermScore / 0.5;
return myCurvedScore;
}
You can find out your exam grade by picking up your exam.
Midterm grades will not be posted to the submissions and scores
page until at least the night of Monday, October 21. This delay
is intended to encourage you to pick up your exam.
- You may pick your exam up from Laura Fox in Levine 308. Laura
is in most days from 9:00 - 4:00. You may only pick up your own
exam, not anyone else's. If Laura is not available, you must
come back another time.
Regrade requests. Review your exam carefully for
grading errors including clerical errors copying scores from
inside pages to the front of the exam and entering them in the
online system (once grades are available online). If you believe
there is a grading error, fill out
a Regrade request form, and submit
it with your original exam to one of your TAs. This is
the only way to request an exam regrade. The dealine for
midterm regrade requests is your recitation on Oct
23/24.

- If you have any questions about your final exam grade, you MUST pick up and examine your graded paper exam before questioning your grade.
- You may pick your exam up from Laura Fox in Levine 308.
Laura is in most days from 9:00 - 4:00. You may only pick up your

Levine 302. This is the only way to request an exam
regrade. Laura is not available at all times, and Levine 302 is
not open at all times; both are generally closed on weekends and
after 5:00pm, so don't wait to the last minute to submit a
regrade request.
- Regrade requests will be accpted through Friday, March 7,
5:00pm.
- If your final exam grade changes as a result of a regrade
request, you course grade will automatically be adjusted if
