I just want to bring to the attention of this community the 
interesting book by Wayne Snyder on the theory of unification. 
This book treats both first-order E-unification
(unification modulo an equational theory E) and higher-order
unification. And yes, it is possible to be rigorous and pedagogical.
Puns intended (of course!), this book shows how apparently
different unification problems can be treated using a unified approach,
the method of transformations.

A proof theory for general unification, by Wayne Snyder, PCS 11,
Birkhauser, Boston,  (1991).
