(to John) What is (was) "Jensen's device"? Vaughn says "with call-by-value the programmer gets fine control over the timing of evaluation, by judicious choice of quotes". Most of the programming I find myself doing is the most awful kind with shell-scripts and the like (for text-processing odd jobs). In these circumstances choice of quotes is far from judicious, it seems totally arbitrary!
