I read mostly fiction, but here are a couple of nonfiction books you should think of reading.

Guns, Germs and Steel, Jared Diamond, Norton, 1997
Sweeping history of the human race, arguing that crops and domesticated animals determine, indirectly, who survives and prospers.
The Quantum Challenge , Greenstien and Aajonc, Jones and Bartlett, 1997
Remarkably clear description of the philosophical issues raised by modern quantum experiments. A model of technical science writing.
Three Roads to Quantum Gravity , another surprisingly easy read.
The Selfish Gene Dawkins
A classic on modern evolutionary theory. For a lighter read, try Beak of the Finch or Love, Time, Memory by science writer Jonathan Weiner. For implications for humans, check out The Moral Animal .
