Installing MySQL

Installed by: David Matuszek,

System: Windows XP

Status: Installed, but can't create Murach's tables

Installing MySQL on Lovecraft, following instructions from:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/installing.html

and getting MySQL from:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/4.1.html

There are three packages:
     Essentials, Complete, Noinstall
which pretty much mean what they say (the third has no installer, must be installed manually). I opted for Complete, since I have the room.

Downloaded mysql-4.1.13-win32.zip
Unzipped to one document, Setup.exe
Double-clicked it
Asked for a Complete installation (includes docs)
Decided to "Configure the MySQL Server now"
Chose "Standard Configuration" because I'm new at it and because this is easier for single users
Installing as a Windows Service, launching it automatically
New password, no remote access, no anonymous account
The "MySQL Server Instance Configuration" dialog has bullets that look like radio buttons, but aren't.
Just press Execute.
Finish.

As per Murach's instructions, went to C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 4.1\bin and executed mysqladmin.exe (NOT winmysqladmin.exe), but it flashed and closed a DOS window; no idea if it did anything. I don't know how to tell if the MySQL server is running.

Tried the DOS command given in http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/windows-server-first-start.html but modified to
"c:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 4.1\bin\mysqld" -- console (That's double minus before console) and got:
Can't start server:
Bind on TCP/IP port: No error
050802 16:03:57 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306 ?
050802 16:03:57 [ERROR] Aborting
050802 16:03:57 [Note] c:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 4.1\bin\mysqld:
Shut down complete

I rebooted. Don't know if that had any effect, but it is running: I did
Start --> Programs --> MySQL --> MySql Server 4.1 --> MySQL Command Line Client
and it asked me for a password, and it appears to be working.

Downloaded Connector/J from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/3.1.html (zip version)
Unzipped--unfortunately, this gave me TWO jar files
    mysql-connector-java-3.1.10-bin.jar
    mysql-connector-java-3.1.10-bin-g.jar
A web search reveals that the -g version is a debugging version and probably should be discarded. So, I copied mysql-connector-java-3.1.10-bin.jar into C:\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.9\common\lib

Murach, p. 608:
From the Murach CD, ran Install.exe
Moved C:\murach\webapps to /webapps
cd to: C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 4.1\bin
execute: >mysql -u root -p < c:\jakarta-tomcat-5.5.9\webapps\murach\MurachMaster.sql
Enter password: **********
ERROR 1005 (HY000) at line 10: Can't create table '.\murach\download.frm' (errno: 150)

Currently stuck at this point.
