Installing MySQL on Lovecraft, following instructions from:
and getting MySQL from:
There are three packages:
Essentials, Complete, Noinstall
which pretty much mean what they say (the third has no installer, must be installed manually). I opted for Complete, since I have the room.
Unzipped to one document,
Asked for a Complete installation (includes docs)
Decided to "Configure the MySQL Server now"
Chose "Standard Configuration" because I'm new at it and because this is easier for single users
Installing as a Windows Service, launching it automatically
New password, no remote access, no anonymous account
The "MySQL Server Instance Configuration" dialog has bullets that look like radio buttons, but aren't.
Just press Execute.
As per Murach's instructions, went to C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 4.1\bin and executed mysqladmin.exe (NOT winmysqladmin.exe), but it flashed and closed a DOS window; no idea if it did anything. I don't know how to tell if the MySQL server is running.

Downloaded Connector/J from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/3.1.html
Unzipped--unfortunately, this gave me TWO jar files
mysql-connector-java-3.1.10-bin.jar A web search reveals that the -g version is a debugging version and
probably should be discarded. So, I copied
