Implicit surfaces

[96] - Implicit surfaces usually create very expressive animations. This technique has also been used to generate symbolic descriptions of an object (a face by example!) by fitting simple primitives to range data of the object. First a primitive is given, then an energy function which measures the difference between the range data and the model is minimized each time a new primitive is added.
