Nick Foster is using direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations to animate liquids with free surfaces. Since the model is based on a set of physically accurate equations, waves, splashing drops, and colliding surfaces behave realistically. Thus, Foster can render and animate a variety of fluid phenomena in an arbitrary 3D environment by simply defining a set of initial conditions and allowing the system to evolve. This is the start of a series of numerical physically based models for fluids and possibly explosions.
