In the first two weeks, many users reported difficulty in downloading our Java applets; this problem can be caused by slow modem connections or overloading of the network at any point between you and Grenoble. The typical error message reported was "NoClassDefFound", naming one of the several "class" files that consitute the applet.
We now provide the applets in zipped "archive" format, which allows them to be downloaded in a single network transfer by browsers that know about archives (e.g. Netscape Navigator 3 and above). This has eliminated the problem for many users. If you are using a different browser, see if using Netscape Navigator helps.
We hope soon to provide the applets in compressed form, with instructions, so that you can download and install them on your own machine, eliminating future applet downloading altogether.
We continue to get reports from some users whose browsers report security errors when they try to download the Arabic-entry applets. This appears to be a problem for users working behind security firewalls, and we have not yet been able to identify and solve the problem. We appreciate feedback of any kind that might help us. Please make sure before reporting such an error that you are indeed running a browser that has Java enabled, and provide the name and version of the browser you are running and a copy of the error messages.
