Brief Biography for Andrew Schein
I was born in Washington D.C. and spent my first nine years growing up in the
suburbs of the capitol. The remainder of my school years were spent in Bryn
Mawr, a suburb of Philadelphia. I graduated from high school in 1993 and
moved to Williamstown, Massachusetts to attend Williams College, completing my
undergraduate studies in 1997 with a B.A. in English
literature and Computer
Science.
After one year working in industry for an internet start up, I came to The University of Pennsylvania in
the Fall of 1998 to pursue advanced studies in Computer Science as well as to
learn more about the growing field of Bioinformatics.
I worked in Professor Lyle Ungar's data mining
research group from 1999-2005 focusing on developing machine learning
solutions to a wide array of problems. My research spanned such areas as: biological sequence modeling,
recommender systems, and natural language processing. My dissertation focused
on developing and identifying best practices for active learning using the
logistic regression classifier.
I graduated from Penn with a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science in
2005. Currently, I develop quantitative strategies for a hedge fund in
Greenwich, CT.
