Applicants to the Master of Science in Engineering in Computer
and Information Science (MSE) should have strong undergraduate
training in mathematics and computer science. The MSE degree provides
scholars with the opportunity for integrated, in-depth study in
the scientific foundations of the rapidly growing field of computer
science. Candidates who do not have an undergraduate major in
computer science should consider applying to the Master
of Computer and Information Technology program.
Please note that it is not possible for us to evaluate a candidate's
potential for admission to the graduate program until the entire
application - transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal
statement (noting research interests), test scores, etc. - has
been received.
MSE Requirements:
The MSE degree program requires completion of ten course units.
This program allows the student to design his or her own focus, with the guidance
and approval of his or her academic adviser. All MSE candidates must take the
following five core courses:
CIS 500 - Software Foundations
CIS 501 - Computer Architecture
CIS 502 - Analysis of Algorithms
CIS 505 - Software Systems
CIS 511 - Theory of Computation
No fewer than seven of the ten course units required for the master's degree
must be CIS courses. Courses offered by other departments may also be counted
toward the MSE degree, with the approval of the student's academic adviser and
the graduate group chair. (In general, outside courses must have a strong technical
component in order to be approved.
A list of pre-approved courses may be found here.)
Master's students are encouraged to participate in advanced courses to increase
the depth of their knowledge in specific research areas, and to write a thesis,
which counts for two elective
course
units.
As a full-time student, it is possible to complete the master's program in
one year, taking four courses in the Fall, four Courses in the Spring, and
two courses in the Summer.
Although there are generally no classes in the evening, it is possible for
an MSE candidate to be enrolled as a part-time student.
There is no departmental funding available for master's candidates; the department's
research assistant and teaching assistant duties are generally met by PhD students.
Full details on degree requirements can be found in the CIS
Graduate Handbook.
