 Curricular Practical Training  

International master's students using curricular practical training enroll in an eleven credit Master's with Practicum degree program that includes the ten credits for the degree and one credit of EAS 897/Curricular Practical TrainingNo tuition or fees are charged for EAS 897 and the grading option is S(atisfactory) or U(nsatisfactory). 

To apply for CPT, a student must:

!. Complete the SEAS Application for Curricular Practical Training (instructions @ www.seas.upenn.edu/graduate/degrees/curricular-practical.php; application form @ www.seas.upenn.edu/graduate/pdf/SEAS_Internal_CPT_form.pdf

  • CIS/MSE students list the Graduate Group Chair, Jianbo Shi & Mike Felker as the advisor/supervisor
  • MCIT students list the Program Director, David Matuszek& Mike Felker as the advisor/supervisor
  • CGGT students list the Program Director, Steve Lane& Mike Felker as the advisor/supervisor
  • Robotics students list the Program Director, CJ Taylor & Mike Felker as the advisor/supervisor
  • EMBS students list the Program Director, Rajeev Alur & Mike Felker as the advisor/supervisor

Mike Felker can sign the CPT application form for the above faculty.

2. Write a Proposal in which you must:

  • Describe the tasks you will undertake.
  • Provide details of the technical content of your position/internship and how it relates to your degree program.
  • Describe how the employment is an integral part of your studies.
  • List courses you've taken as a graduate student and how the position/internship will provide valuable hands-on experience in conjunction with these courses.
  • State that the EAS 897 is the required eleventh credit for the Master's with Practicum degree program.
  • For evaluation, all students enrolled in CPT must provide a Mid-Point Progress Report and the Final Progress Report at the conclusion of the CPT. State that in the proposal that you will submit the Mid-Point & Final Progress Reports and briefly indicate to the best of your ability, items that might be covered in these two Reports; these two reports are emailed to Mike.

3. Have the Offer from the employer

4. Bring all of the above to Mike in Moore/GRW/Levine north 172; when processed, you will be registered for the CPT credit. 

5. Apply for F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) through the UPenn office of International Student & Scholar Services - instructions @ www.upenn.edu/oip/iss/visa/f1/cpt.html - use the SEAS Advisor option for the advisor approval.

MASTER'S STUDENTS CAN ONLY REGISTER FOR EAS 897 ONCE.

IF A MASTER'S STUDENT APPLIES FOR CPT A SECOND TIME, US IMMIGRATION REQUIRES THAT THE ACADEMIC ENROLLMENT BE FOR AN INDEPENDENT STUDY FOR WHICH THE STUDENT IS CHARGED THE SAME AMOUNT AS A REGULAR CLASS

THE INDEPENDENT STUDY MUST BE UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A FACULTY ADVISOR AND THE ACADEMIC COMPONENT OF THE CPT MUST BE EQUIVALENT TO THE WORK INVOLVED FOR A CIS 500-LEVEL COURSE.  CLICK HERE FOR THE INDEPENDENT STUDY APPROVAL FORM.

THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OIP WILL APPROVE A SECOND CPT REQUEST.

CIS doctoral students using CPT register for EAS 898/CPT Practicum under the supervision of their advisor, who will determine the evaluation process and grading, and who will approve the SEAS Application for CPT & OIP CPT Form

Vis a vis funding, etc., CIS doctoral students should also complete the CIS DOCTORAL STUDENT CHANGE OF STUDENT STATUS FORM.
