" (Data Driven) Network Economics Some thoughts and several real world applications "

 

Abstract:

In this talk I will first argue that there currently exists a deep dichotomy between scholarly research on Network Economics and actual operating needs faced by telcos. Subsequently I will claim that Big Data and computational methods can be combined to observe fundamental metrics that impact upon the economics of a telco at a fine granularity that was never possible before. Achieving such a fine understanding of costs, profits margins, etc is fundamental for ensuring the viability of a telco in view of ever increasing traffic volumes but flattening revenues due to market saturation and flat-rate pricing. I will present several applications of the above preached data driven network economics in end customer pricing, inter-ISP economic settlement, and cost modeling and sharing. 

Bio: Nikolaos Laoutaris is a senior researcher at the Internet research group of Telefonica Research in Barcelona. Prior to joining the Barcelona lab he was a postdoc fellow at Harvard University and a Marie Curie postdoc fellow at Boston University. He got his PhD in computer science from the University of Athens in 2004. His general research interests are on system, algorithmic, and performance evaluation aspects of computer networks and distributed systems. Current projects include: Efficient inter-datacenter bulk transfers, energy-efficient distributed system design, content distribution for long tail content, transparent scaling of social networks, pricing of broadband services and ISP interconnection economics.
