Here is what I do: dvips -Ppdf -t letter -o filename.ps filename
If you are freaking out because you want to get your bibliography formatted for a particular journal, try looking for the journal's publisher in the TexLive CD, or equivalently the CTAN archive. (e.g. kluwer.bst which requires the Harvard kit from the BibTex resources above) Also, Email your editor; they are often quite flexible.
